The Mother Sashiko Pants, a unisex style by Cottle, Japan, is made using a traditional Sashiko woven cotton cloth, commonly used in judo uniforms. The uneven, three-dimensional texture, combined with the indigo dye, creates a deep indigo color that is different from denim, and the contrast between the accumulated indigo and the worn-in look is will develop a beautiful wear-patina as time evolves.
With continued wear, the fabric will conform to your body, the color and texture will deepen, and it will become a one-of-a-kind garment.

Dyed using the most traditional indigo-dyeing technique from ancient times using indigo leaves and lye, Cottle applys a special natural dyeing technique that has a higher colorfastness (colorfastness, lightfastness) than usual.
Since all the dyeing is done by hand, unevenness and color pooling may occur in some areas.

Having had the privilege of visiting Toshi's atelier in Kojima, it allowed me to experience a closer connection to material and maker and understanding their way of working.

The fabrics and dyes used by COTTLE are are designed and developed in-house and in collaboration with artisans, shokunin, in Japan. Each and every garment is completely made by hand, every step of the way.
Toshi-san's work showcases often long forgotten making and dyeing techniques, reinterpreted in a modern form. Personally, I consider the work of Cottle as a form of arts & crafts which has found its way into textile garments.
